CIRA  stands for the Canadian Internet Registration Authority. It is a not-for-profit organization mandated by the Canadian government to operate the .ca top-level domain. CIRA was incorporated in 1998 to set policy for and operate the .ca domain.

CIRA has determined that the .ca domain space should be developed as a key public resource for the social and economic development of all Canadians. Accordingly, those registering a .ca domain name must meet certain Canadian Presence Requirements.

The legal type determines whether Registrants are eligible to register .ca domain names and ensures that you have a legal connection to Canada. CIRA requires you to establish Canadian presence requirements before granting you a .ca domain.

In order to register .ca domain, at least one legal type to meet CIRA’s Canadian presence requirements. The legal type categories are the following:

   1. Canadian citizen

   2. Permanent resident of Canada

   3. Legal representative of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

   4. Corporation (Canada or Canadian province or territory)

   5. Trust established in Canada

   6. Partnership registered in Canada

   7. Canadian unincorporated association

   8. Canadian trade union

   9. Canadian political party

  10. Canadian educational institution

  11. Canadian library, archive or museum

  12. Canadian hospital

  13. Her Majesty the Queen

  14. Indian band recognized by the Indian Act of Canada
